Go Jess |
Jessica traveled to Palmerston North for the Manawatu Open in the weekend and won the women's and under 21 singles. This was an excellent achievement against a strong field including ex-senior NZ reps Raewyn Young and Sabine Westenra as well as current junior rep Natalie Paterson.
This achievement represents something of a breakthrough for Jessica as she has put in heaps of effort through the year.
Congratulations on an awesome result Jess.

James Harter is an enthusiastic Table Tennis player who took on the sport in 2002, where he first began at a table tennis club within a small school named Korokoro school. He then and moved on to play at the Empire Table Tennis Club within the Petone region. His interest in the sport never stopped, and over the years he began to be recognised by Wellington coaches and selectors. Gradually, James began to make his way into Wellington teams and just recently represented the Wellington Open Men's top team at the 2008 New Zealand nationals. Although James has never represented New Zealand, he has played individually in some big tournaments such as the Oceania Championships and a few World Junior Circuits. Today, James is in his first year studying a Bachelor in Computing and Mathematical Sciences having come from Wellington to attend Waikato University. His old high school was Hutt Valley High School whereby in one year he was part of the team that won the national school's title. His recent highlights would have to be making the under 21s semi final at the 2008 North Island Championships with all round results pushing him up to 25th on the national men's rating list. James has a real passion for the game, and cant imagine his life without Table Tennis, whilst on the scholarship he hopes to take his game even further, with the New Zealand shirt still in his sights. |

Sarah Her-Lee has come a long way since she immigrated to New Zealand with her family from Taiwan when she was ten, unable to speak English and with no specific sporting skills. She began playing table tennis at the age of 14. Her rapid advancement in just seven years in her chosen sport, despite being a "late starter", demonstrates Sarah's ability, determination, strong competitive streak, work ethic and active pursuit of excellence. Sarah first represented New Zealand as a junior in 2002. After a break in 2003, Sarah returned to active training in 2004, rapidly re-establishing herself at the top. In 2005 Sarah won the Waikato women's title for the fourth year, won open women's tournaments in Auckland and the lower North Island and capped the year off by being selected for the test match against Australia and duly winning her match. 2006 started in excellent fashion for Sarah, being chosen in the NZ women's team for the World Teams Championships recently held in Germany. In her first opportunity to gain experience against the world's best senior representatives, Sarah showed her ability to step up to a higher level, winning half of her matches. In July 2006 she represented New Zealand at the Oceania Championships in the women's' team, taking away a silver medal. She then went on to compete at the North Island Open Champs a week later, winner another two silvers in both the under 21 women's singles, and the under 21 mix doubles, and gold in the Open Women's Doubles. Aside from her sporting pursuit, Sarah has another busy year of study ahead pursuing a conjoint degree in Law and Social Science, and being on the Hillary Scholar Programme. |

Michelle McCarthy is currently in her 2nd year of studying toward a BMS, majoring in International Management with Japanese, and Public Relations. She recently won the Open Women's singles, doubles and mixed doubles at the NZ Summer Nationals, which were held here in Hamilton. Her career highlights include competing at the World Junior Championships in Austria, 2005 and playing against the Singaporean Commonwealth Games gold-medallist at the Australian Open Senior Champs last year. Her future aspirations is to represent NZ at the 2010 Commonwealth Games to be held in India, and to get to an Olympic Games....if not to play table tennis, then to be a translator or a member of the event management team! Michelle attended Sacred Heart College in Lower Hutt where she was a house captain and the captain of the 1st 11 hockey team. She completed her Gold Duke of Edinburgh award in her 7th form year, went on a 2 month exchange to Japan, and also really enjoys art/design, other cultures and anything outdoors! Currently Michelle is a student ambassador for the University of Waikato, and is also a mentor for one of the aspiring Waikato junior table tennis players. |
