New Zealand Duo Dominate Matters at New Caledonia Open

New Zealand’s Shane Laugesen and Villa Yan emerged as the most successful players at the recently held New Calendonia Open Table Tennis Championships.

Both emerged with a host of titles. They won the respective Men’s and Women’s Singles crowns, Shane Laugesen partnered colleague Liu Chao to victory in the Men’s Doubles, Villa Yan secured the Women’s Doubles title with Australia’s Belinda Le and together the two Oceania stars were in harmony. They won the Mixed Doubles title.

Furthermore, Villa Yan won both the Under 18 and Under 15 Girls’ Singles titles ; she partnered Australia’s Belinda Le to success in the Under 18 Girls’ Doubles and Tahiti’s Vaihiria Gaumet to victory in the Under 15 Girls’ Doubles, whilst in the Under 15 Mixed Doubles she emerged victorious with Australia’s Kevin Wu.

The only title to elude her grasp was the Under 18 Mixed Doubles crown ; partnering Kevin Wu the duo lost in the semi-finals to the eventual champions, Wade Townsed and Belinda Le.

Men’s Singles
The Men’s Singles event saw Shane Laugesen beat the host association’s Frédéric Quach at the semi-final stage before overcoming New Zealand team colleague, Liu Chao, in the final; the latter having ended the progress of Australia’s Wade Townsend one round earlier.

In each event a New Caledonia champion was nominated; in the Men’s Singles that honour went to Frédéric Quach.

Women’s Singles
Meanwhile in the Women’s Singles event Villa Yan overcame Tuarikirau Thunot of Tahiti in the semis, whilst at the same stage Australia’s Belinda Le beat New Caledonia’s Cathy Gauthier. Throughout the event Yan Villa had impressed and in the final she continued to impress.

She beat Belinda Le. The New Caledonia champion was Cathy Gauthier.

Men’s Doubles
The Men’s Doubles and the Women’s Doubles events saw the singles finalists in harmony.

Shane Laugesen and Liu Chao beat New Caledonia’s Raphaël Landelle and Jérôme Arnal in the semis before recording a final win over Maxime Bataillard and Vincent Dey, also of New Caledonia.

Maxime Bataillard and Vincent Dey were declared New Caledonia champions having beaten the Australians Kane and Wade Townsend in the semi-finals.

Women’s Doubles
In the Women’s Doubles event Belinda Le and Villa Yan overcame New Caledonia’s Cathy Gauthier and Estelle N’guyen in the semis before securing the title with victory over a second New Caledonian pairing in the guise of Alex Heraclide and Ornella Bouteille.

The latter duo who beat Julie Wanegui of France and Aug Ouagneppe of New Caledonia in the semis received the New Caledonia acclamation.

Mixed Doubles
It was a similar story in the Mixed Doubles with Shane Laugesen and Villa Yan dominant.

They combined to beat Australia’s Kane Townsend and Tahiti’s Tuarikirau in the semis before overcoming Australia’s Wade Townsend and Belinda Le in the final. Frédéric Quach and Alexandra Heraclide were named New Caledonia champions having reached the semi-finals where they lost to Wade Townsend and Belinda Le.

Australia
Success for New Zealand whilst in the boys’ events it was Australia who were to the fore and the name Townsend in particular.

Wade Townsend beat Kane Townsend in the final of the Under 18 Boys’ Singles whilst in the final of the Under 15 Boys’ Singles Kane Townsend accounted for Stéphane Gilabert of New Caledonia.
