WAIKATO TABLE TENNIS ASSOCIATION

Selection Process for Men’s, Women’s, and Junior teams in 2010

Selection for a Waikato representative team in 2010 will be decided upon through 3 trials to take place before each major event (North Island teams and National team’s competitions).

The dates for the first of these trials are:

Thu, 6th of May, 6.30pm (Juniors start), 7.30pm (Seniors start)
Sun, 9th of May, 10.15am (All players)
Thu, 20th of May, 6.30pm (Juniors start), 7.30pm (Seniors start)

The pre-Nationals trials will be advised at a later date.

It is expected that anyone wishing to represent Waikato in the 2010 North Island Teams Championships attend at least 2 of these trials. Those players who attend all 3 trials will have only their 2 best taken into consideration when teams are selected.

Each player wishing to compete in a trial is required to meet the criteria set out later in this document.

There is no fee for entry in the Waikato teams’ trials.

Where trials are held for a team’s competition that has both Senior and junior events, trials for both Senior and junior teams will be held alongside each other. Anyone wishing to be eligible for both Senior and junior teams will be required to compete in both Senior and junior trials. This is because such players may be expected to play in this more intense fashion at the events and must therefore qualify in the same way.

Trials will consist of a randomised round-robin draw for each event. Games must be played as set out on the round-robin sheet. For grades where there are more than 7 players competing, even amounts of round-robin draws will be created with positions based on current National ratings. There will then be cross-over matches between the 2 top players in each pool, and between the 2 bottom players in each pool.

The format for all matches will be the best of 5 games to 11.

Selection and announcement of teams will occur within 1 week of the last trial, and will be emailed (where possible) and posted on the tournament section of the stadium noticeboard.

Below are the criteria for entry into Waikato teams’ trials.

  • You must be a current Waikato Table Tennis Association member.
  • You must not have any fees outstanding, as advised by the Association Treasurer.
  • You must not be currently facing any disciplinary action from either Waikato Table Tennis Association or Table Tennis New Zealand.
  • You must be eligible and available to compete in the team’s competition for which trials are being held.
  • You must be recognised by the Waikato Table Tennis Association as training on a regular basis of at least once per week in the 4 weeks leading up to the trials. This can either be group training in a recognised programme, or individual training with a recognised coach.
  • For those players who do not live in Waikato but wish to compete for a place in a Waikato team, in addition to the above criteria, you must have represented Waikato in either team or individual competitions for at least 3 of the previous 4 years. You must also not be facing disciplinary action from the Association where you are a resident.

Any questions or issues may be directed to the Waikato Table Tennis Association Selector, Tam Rennie, on 027 310 8649.
