TOP NZ JUNIOR TABLE TENNIS PLAYERS TAKE ON WORLD CIRCUIT

New Zealand’s top junior table tennis players are set to take on the best of the Asia Pacific region at the New Zealand ITTF World Junior Circuit to be held at Auckland’s North Shore Events Centre from July 7th to 15th.

It is only the second time the circuit, which consists of 20 tournaments played throughout the world every year, has come to New Zealand.

Similar to the WTA and ATP tennis tours the circuit is a chance for table tennis players to improve their world junior rankings and for New Zealand teams to qualify for the yearly World Junior Championships.

The event is also an important warm-up to the 2008 ITTF World Junior Championships which is being held in North Shore City at the same venue. It will be the first time a World table tennis championship has come to the Oceania region.

Over 140 players from 15 countries including Japan, Korea and India will compete in both team and individual events in either the under 15 or under 18 age-group categories in the World Junior Circuit.

New Zealand is fielding 24 players in the team events and also is competing for the right to represent the Oceania region at the World Junior championship finals. It must beat teams from Australia, Fiji, Tahiti Nui, Kiribati, Solomon Islands, Palau, New Caledonia, Vanuatu and the Cook Islands in order qualify as one of 16 teams at  the 2007 World Junior Championship finals  in San Francisco in December.

The circuit is also being held in conjunction with this year’s North Island Championships in which players of all ages can compete.

The North Island Championships is the second largest table tennis event held in New Zealand each year behind the New Zealand Nationals and this year 240 entries have been received. It features all of New Zealand's top players including NZ  #1 and 2 time Commonwealth Games medallist Karen Li (North Harbour) who is starting her campaign for the Beijing Olympics.

Next year’s 2008 World Junior Championships will be held from December  6th to 13th  in North Shore City.

The 2007 New Zealand World Junior Circuit event, including Oceania junior teams’ qualification for the 2007 World Junior Championships in San Francisco, will be held in conjunction with the North Island Championships at the North Shore Events Center in Northcote, Auckland.
