Villa Yan wins Waikato Junior Girls Secondary Sports Award
Waikato teenager Villa Yan picked up the Waikato Sports Award for 2006 for the Junior Sportswoman of the Year at the awards function, following her outstanding results in the last year.
2006 was a "breakthrough season" for Villa Yan. She won her first open women's singles tournament title, represented New Zealand for the first (second and third) time and she won her first National Singles title. All this after just four years of play and at the tender age of 14. With the support of her mother, Anita, and coach, Tom Liu, Villa has developed rapidly since she started playing table tennis only four years ago. This is a result of her natural aptitude for the game, a sound work ethic intelligent application of her skills during matches. If she continues to apply herself Villa has a very bright future in table tennis.
