New Zealand Team For University Games
Table Tennis New Zealand is pleased to advise that University Sport NZ is sending a table tennis team to compete at the 2007 World University Games. The Games are second only to the Olympics in size as a globally held multi-sport event. Table tennis has recently been included as one of the 12 “core” sports that are a compulsory part of the bi-annual event. Based on previous tournaments, the playing standard at this event will be world class and University Sport New Zealand has agreed to include table tennis in its team for the event on the basis we are able to select teams made up predominantly of nationally ranked seniors. TTNZ will send a Men’s and a Women’s team each of four players.
The players selected are listed below with their home association and 2006 senior ranking in brackets;

All players selected (including reserves) have represented NZ senior and/or junior teams in the last 12 months. The Men's team has 3 players (Wallace, Craven and Zhu) in the senior team to the World Individual Champs and Commonwealth Champs in May 2007 and should be particularly well prepared for the University event. The Women's team calls on a wealth of experience gained in 2006 from Commonwealth Games (Shu), World Teams Champs (Shu, Ho and Squire), World Junior Champs (Shu and Squire), Oceania Champs (Shu, Ho, McCarthy and Squire) and Australian Open (Ho and McCarthy). This experience will be vital to producing quality performances at such a world class event.
Waikato table tennis is strongly represented in these selections in what are full strength teams to compete at a major world class table tennis and multi-sport event. This reflects on the Waikato development programme as well as the Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship Programme that is being run at Waikato University. The Hillary Programme supports scholars through their sport skill development will assisting them maintain a 'B' average in their academic studies and has attracted players to the region to take advantage of its benefits.
